New Medicare Cards
Coming April 2019
A Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) will replace the social security based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) on the new Medicare cards being issued by April 2019. We have identified a few key items for you on the HICN to MBI process.
Why is CMS issuing Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers (MBI)?
Law requires CMS to remove Social Security Numbers (SSN) from all Medicare cards by April 2019. A new unique MBI will replace the current HICN on the new Medicare cards. CMS is taking this step to protect people with Medicare from fraudulent use of SSNs.
What is the timeline?
During the transition period, health plans must accept both HICNs and MBIs on all transactions. CMS will be sharing monthly HICN to MBI crosswalks with health plans for their impacted members. Crosswalks will be shared once a month for new members.
How will this impact you?
During the HICN to MBI conversion, there could be instances of HICNs that are not converted to MBIs correctly or timely. The timing could cause a delay in determining if the application should be an initial or renewal commission. Please note that this transition will not impact DeanCare Medicare Select plans.
