Stress and Smoking

Stress and SmokingStress is all around us every day. There are many ways to handle stress: some are healthy, others are not.

Unfortunately, many smokers often deal with stress by smoking more. This can just add to the stress even further.

Consider this:

  • Smoking increases your body's response to stress.
  • Smoking is expensive. At $6/pack, smoking just one pack per day adds up to nearly $2,200/year. This expense adds to the stress related to financial difficulties. See how much you're spending by using the "Cost of Smoking" calculator on the right.
  • Smokers are more likely to get sick, which can lead to lost time from work, further adding to stress at work.

What can you do?

  • Make an appointment with your health care provider. There are many effective medications and proven strategies to help you quit.
  • Pick a quit date in the near future. It's best if you begin within two weeks of making the decision to quit.
  • Contact the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line. This is a free, confidential help line staffed by smoking cessation experts who can help you quit.
  • Cut down. It is easier to quit from a ½ pack per day than a full pack per day.
  • To cut down, buy your cigarettes one pack at a time (no cartons), don't smoke in the car or house, smoke with your opposite hand, change brands, switch from matches to lighter or vice versa.
  • Figure out how much you currently are spending on smoking. It really adds up!
