Pumpkin-carvings, haunted houses and costume contests are staples we’ve all come to expect in the fall. This year, why not switch things up with these fun family events that celebrate the season?
Hikes and Hayrides in Cherokee Marsh
Take the family on a free, guided hike through one of Madison’s most scenic nature preserves, Cherokee Marsh. After a walk through the wetlands, climb onto the bed of a hay wagon and experience Cherokee’s stunning vistas in a wild, new way. No reservations are necessary, and hayride tickets cost only $2 per person.
When: Saturday, October 19 from 1–4 p.m.

Downtown Madison Family Halloween
Live shows, crafts, hayrides and, of course, candy await families at the Capitol for this family-friendly event. Check out Downtown Madison’s website for all a list of all the goings-on!

Treinen Farm’s Zompocalypse
If your teens are looking for an outing with an edge, shuffle over to Treinen Farm’s annual gathering of the undead. Put on your goriest getup for a night of bonfires, zombie movies, bison burgers and maze-wandering with your fellow reanimated corpses. The maze rests 20 miles from Madison, and admission is only $10.
When: Saturday, October 26 from 7 p.m. to Midnight

Lapacek’s Orchard’s Apple-Palooza
A 40-minute drive from Madison, Lapacek’s produces a crop of sweet seasonal activities like “Yoga in the Orchard,” a photo scavenger hunt, a tractor tire playground and the opportunity to enjoy apple cider donuts baked fresh every Saturday. This year’s Apple-Palooza event features an apple pie baking contest with fans voting for their favorite on the farm’s blog.
