Our Favorite Area Bike Trails

Dean employees share the best places to have fun on two wheels

As the weather (finally) warms up, it’s a great time to grab a bike and hit the trail for family fun and heart-pumping exercise. Here at Dean we have our fair share of cycling enthusiasts, and they’re sharing their favorite places to bike:

  • Looking for a great weekend outing? Dean Health Plan team member Mitch Soetenga suggests two scenic trails that are easy enough for kids to tackle. Pheasant Branch Conservancy offers a peaceful oasis in Middleton, with trails that wind through forest and wetlands. A two-hour ride around Lake Monona is perfect for a warm day and could include a pit stop at the Olbrich Botanical Gardens, just off the trail.
  • When Dean team member Beth Kuglitsch hits the trails, she likes to explore the wilder side of Wisconsin. A few of her favorites include the Eau Claire City trails, which connect to the Chippewa River State Trail and then the Red Cedar State Trail and for 50 traffic-free off-road miles. She also enjoys the Bearskin-Hiawatha State Trail in the Minocqua/Tomahawk area. The trail includes 25 miles of off-road biking. When she’s looking to head south, Beth enjoys the Badger State Trail all the way to the Illinois border as well as the Rock River Parkway and Peace Trails in Janesville.
  • Dean Health Plan employee Justin Barnes enjoys his weekends on the Elory-Sparta Trail, where bikers can ride through old train tunnels that once made up the mainline of the Chicago and North Western Railway.
  • If you’re looking for a way to burn calories while helping the environment, Dean team member Grant Foster suggests biking to work via one of Madison’s commuter trails. The Capital City Path and Southwest Commuter Path connect a number of towns all over the area to downtown Madison. Easily map your route using the City’s online tool.
  • When Dean Family Medicine physician Meetul Shah is looking for a new area bike trail, he visits Jim Winkle’s Bike Rides from Madison site. This list of rides for more advanced cyclists includes daytrips close to home and weekend excursions with fun overnight stays at Wisconsin state parks.
