4 Local Spring Break Getaways

With spring break around the corner, it’s not too late to plan a getaway that’s close to home, affordable and fun for the entire family. Check out these local Wisconsin destinations with tips on places to stay and sites to see.

  1. Milwaukee: Just a quick hour and a half drive from Madison, Milwaukee is just far enough from home to get a little change of scenery. Leave in the morning for a day trip and you’ll have plenty of time for a few activities. The Milwaukee County Zoo is open daily March through May from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If the weather isn’t nice enough for outdoor activities, the Domes are a conservatory featuring various climates and plant life. Before heading home, grab a late lunch (weekends only) or dinner at the Safe House. Kids will love the spy-themed restaurant “secretly” located behind International Exports Ltd.
  2. The Dells: If you weren’t able to plan a trip to a tropical locale, visit the Dells for a weekend to enjoy water slides, hot tubs, spas and more. The Great Wolf Lodge has everything your family needs in one place: fun Northwoods themed suites, rides for all ages, daily activities and multiple dining options. If you want to make the trip extra special, consider staying at a nearby bed and breakfast or local cottage to get some more intimate family time.
  3. New Glarus: Rent a dream home located on 20 acres of gorgeous land along the Little Sugar River. The Little Sugar River Farm is surrounded by gardens and orchards with nearby biking and hiking trails through hills, wildlife habitats, rivers and forests. This mini-vacation is perfect for the family who just wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily of life in the city. Plus there’s still plenty to do nearby, like a farm-to-table meal at the Cow & Quince, historical treasures at the Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum and local treats at the Maple Leaf Cheese & Chocolate Haus
  4. Madison: Treat yourself to a staycation with a night (or two) on the town. The Edgewater, overlooking Lake Mendota, has a full-service spa, several restaurants and is just minutes from downtown. If you bring the kids, catch a family-friendly show at the Overture Center or, if you get a sitter, see a Broadway classic like Mamma Mia. In the morning, stroll over to the Capitol Square and check out the Wisconsin Historical Museum, Children’s Museum or Veterans Museum. Spend the rest of your staycation shopping on State Street or relaxing in a café.
