Top Five Questions During Open Enrollment

There’s a lot going on in our lives, but worrying about getting the best possible health insurance should not be one of them. With Open Enrollment running through February 15, we’ve put together the top five things you need to know to find the best plan for you.

  1. What Is Open Enrollment? Open Enrollment is the annual period designated by the federal government for people to buy health insurance on their own. This period runs from November 15 through February 15. If you don’t enroll for coverage during this period, you generally can’t buy health coverage until the 2016 open enrollment period.

  2. Who Should Be Buying Insurance During Open Enrollment? If you don’t already have insurance through an employer, your parents or a government sponsored plan like Medicare or Medicaid, you need to buy health coverage or pay a fee. Basically, anyone who files taxes is required to buy health insurance.

  3. How Do I Find Out if I Qualify for Price Breaks or Discounts? Are you single with no dependents and make less than $45,000 per year? Are you a family of four making less than $96,000 per year? You may qualify for a price break, also known as a subsidy, to reduce your health care costs. To find out what price breaks are available to you, visit for calculators and details on discounts.

  4. How Do My Monthly Premiums Get Calculated? Your premium is the amount you pay per month for your health plan and varies according to the benefits and coverage levels you want. Visit to calculate your monthly premium based on which plan you choose, your income and dependents. Your results will show your monthly payment, which may include discounts on premiums, doctor visits or both.

  5. How Does Dean Fit In? Dean Health Plan has been providing health insurance in South Central Wisconsin for over 30 years. In addition to offering products through employer groups, we sell insurance directly to individuals and their families. In fact, we sold more individual and family health insurance than any other health plan in the area last year. If you have questions about health insurance, stop by the Dean Spot in West Towne Mall! Our customer service reps are available in person Monday through Friday from 1 pm to 9 pm to guide you through the Open Enrollment process.
