Surprising Ways to Lose Weight

Looking to lose a few extra pounds? Start  making these five habits part of your routine for a little help on the scale.

  • Serve from the stove. By leaving your serving dishes on the stove instead of at the table, you will eat nearly ten percent less. Same goes for snacks packed into single-serving containers. Eating straight from a large container increases consumption by about 61 percent.
  • Mix it up (sometimes). Variety can stoke your appetite. Mix up the produce you buy to eat more of them, but limit the variety of treats you buy.
  • Don’t overdo healthy foods. Sometimes, you can get too much of a good thing. Healthy foods, like almond butter, can sabotage hard work losing weight when you eat too much.
  • Breathe. If you turn to food to deal with stress, try the 4-7-8 breath instead. Inhale through your nose to a count of four. Hold for a count of seven. Then exhale through your mouth with a whoosh for a count of eight. Repeat four times.
  • Hit the hay. Substantial medical evidence suggests that how much you sleep and the quality of your sleep may be key to balancing hormones that are tied to appetite. Aim to get about eight hours of uninterrupted, high quality sleep each night.
