Dean Sports Medicine has expanded its concussion treatment program by offering ImPACT concussion management to local and regional athletes.
ImPACT is a user-friendly, computer-based testing program specifically designed for the management of sports-related concussion. The athlete's health history, current symptoms and neuropsychological data is recorded prior to and following an injury. The test takes approximately 25 minutes to complete.
A large number of sports teams, including the Green Bay Packers, the Milwaukee Brewers and the University of Wisconsin Badgers, use ImPACT for concussion assessment.
The Baseline Test
Athletes should take the baseline test, which evaluates the athlete's reaction time, concentration and memory with a series of questions, prior to head injury. That way, should head injury occur, Dean SportsMedicine physicians will be able to compare pre-injury and post-injury test results.
If your school or organization does not offer ImPACT baseline tests, Dean Sports Medicine offers athletes the opportunity to take the test. Call (608) 294-6090 to schedule a pre-injury ImPACT baseline test. The cost is $15 and can be paid via cash, check, or credit card upon arrival at our clinic.
Athletes who have sustained concussions can call Dean Sports Medicine at (608) 294-6090 to schedule an ImPACT post-injury assessment. These appointments with Sports Medicine staff will be scheduled after athletes have sustained injury.
Dean Sports Medicine physicians can use the ImPACT test to compare the post-concussion ImPACT results against pre-injury test results or normative data, which provides objective information to assist in developing a treatment plan and to ensure the athlete's safety.
The ImPact baseline test is an out-of-pocket cost within most insurance plans. Post-injury care is often is covered by insurance, depending on your policy.
