The Steady Strides program is not your traditional total joint replacement program. Backed by an expert medical team and care coordinator, the Steady Strides program works to relieve pain, restore independence and return patients back to work and normal activities as quickly as possible.

The team-supported system of care emphasizes wellness and provides improved outcomes and satisfaction levels when compared to traditional orthopedic approaches. Unique features of the Steady Strides program include:

  • A majority of patients are able to walk the first day after surgery and typically leave the hospital two days post-surgery.
  • In addition to experienced physicians and a dedicated care team, the program includes a Care Coordinator who oversees the entire course of treatment; before, during and after.
  • All patients take a hands on approach with their treatment, during each step of the program. Through the program’s user-friendly Guidebook, patients are given the necessary information to help them reach a more successful outcome.
  • Patients recover in casual clothing instead of traditional gowns, enjoy a private room and their family and friends participate as coaches throughout the recovery process.
  • The program takes on a group recovery approach, encouraging group activities with other total joint replacement patients in similar treatment programs.

Patient Testimonials

"It's awesome! It's so positive," Julie Ewing Christiansen enthuses. "The physical therapy was dynamite! You develop some camaraderie with the other [joint replacement] patients."

"My knees are not limiting my mobility anymore. I have a good range of motion and flexibility, and can go up steps regular," says Don Zimmerman.

"I was walking the same day of surgery," recalls Terry Ryan, referring to his total knee replacement in Dean Health Plan's Steady Strides program. There's some competition with other people who had the surgery. It's kind of unique because you try to do the best for yourself and try to beat the other person."
