Special Enrollment Period Terminology

This information applies to Individual/Family policies purchased directly from Dean Health Plan or through an insurance agent. If you receive your insurance through your employer, please contact your benefits administrator.

Qualifying Event – a change in life that makes an individual or a family eligible to enroll in or make a change to health coverage outside of the regular open enrollment period. Examples include marriage, birth or loss of employer-based insurance.

Enrollment Period – the amount of time you have to enroll in or make a change to your health insurance coverage after the qualifying event. For example, after getting married you have 60 days to add your spouse to your insurance plan. Most qualifying events have a 60 day Enrollment Period.

Effective Coverage Date – this is the date your health insurance coverage will begin. The effective coverage date depends on the qualifying event. For example, a new baby is covered immediately the day they are born, but coverage for a new spouse added to your plan begins on the first day of the month after you make the change to your insurance plan.

Qualifying Event Enrollment Period Effective Coverage Date
Marriage 60 days from the wedding date Begins on the 1st day of the month following selection of coverage
Example
Brandon and Taylor get married on March 6, 2014. Both have individual insurance plans and want to purchase one plan together. They have until May 5, 2014 (60 days) to enroll in their new plan. If they enroll on March 21, their new coverage will begin on April 1, 2014.
