What's the difference between a Dean Health
System provider and a Dean Health Plan provider?
Dean
Health System providers (doctors,
advanced practitioners and other clinicians) are physicians
and medical staff who practice at Dean
Health System locations (e.g. Dean Clinics, Dean Specialty
Clinics, Dean/St. Mary's Regional Clinics, and Davis Duehr
Dean eye centers), partner hospitals (e.g. St. Mary's Hospital
in
Madison, WI) and
at outreach
locations in southern Wisconsin.
Dean Health Plan providers are doctors and advanced practitioners who are authorized to provide medical services for members who have Dean Health Plan insurance. All Dean Health System doctors are Dean Health Plan preferred providers. However, Dean Health Plan also offers the option to see other preferred providers at some non-Dean clinic locations, particularly in towns where Dean Health System does not have a clinic or outreach location. You can search for all Dean Health Plan providers using the Dean Health Plan "Find a Provider" search.
Can I see a Dean Health System doctor if I don't have Dean Health Plan insurance?
Dean Health System physicians accept patients with most major health insurance plans, Medicare, Medicaid, and self-pay. If you are unsure whether your health insurance plan allows you to see a Dean Health System doctor, check with your insurance company before making an appointment. Always bring your insurance member card to your clinic appointment, and provide your insurance information when you check-in at the registration desk.
What is a Primary Care Provider (PCP)?
A Primary Care Provider (PCP) provides on-going care for patients, including regular physical exams and most primary health care needs. When necessary, your primary care provider refers you to a specialist for further examination and treatment. A PCP can be a Medical Doctor (MD), a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or a certified Physician Assistant (PAC). Within Dean Health System, you can choose from the following primary care specialties:
- Family Medicine (care for the whole family including young children and adults).
- Family Medicine & Obstetrics (care for the whole family, and care for women during pregnancy and delivery)
- Internal Medicine (care for young and older adults)
- Obstetrics & Gynecology - OB/GYN (care for the female reproductive system, pregnancy and childbirth)
- Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine (care for children and teenagers)
What is an Advanced Practitioner (Mid-level Provider)?
Advanced practitioners, sometimes called mid-level providers, are licensed, certified health care professionals that include Certified Physician Assistants (PA-Cs), Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber (APNP) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). Dean Health System has advanced practitioners in its primary care departments, Urgent Care and most surgery departments. This allows patients to have greater access to quality medical care.
All of Dean's PAs, NPs and CRNAs are board certified and work closely with physicians to provide you the best possible care. They can facilitate immediate physician access when necessary.
Advanced practitioners can provide the following services for patients:
- Check-ups and physicals
- Preventive health care services
- Diagnosis and treatment of common illnesses, conditions and injuries
Where can I make an appointment with a Dean Health System doctor?
You can make an appointment with your doctor at any of their primary practice locations. You will find these locations listed within each physician's profile. A physician's location may change without much notice, so it is always a good idea to call the clinic to verify a physician's most current clinic information. A referral from your primary physician may be needed to see a Dean specialist.
