Dean/St. Mary’s Nurse Practitioner Named Preceptor of the Year

Baraboo Area N.P. Recognized Nationally as Student Mentor

LAKE DELTON, WI—Judith Ellington, FNP has been awarded the 2008 Preceptor of the Year by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. Ellington, of the Lake Delton Clinic, has served families of Baraboo and the Wisconsin Dells area for nearly 32 years.

Ellington has mentored students from the nurse practitioner program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the past 30 years, with the addition of several students from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh when their program began. Ellington was nominated for the Preceptor of the Year award by nurse practitioner faculty at UW-Madison. Ellington says it is an honor to work with promising N.P. students as they grow into skilled and dedicated health professionals.

“When I first began practicing, the concept of nurse practitioner was new and there were relatively few of us,” says Ellington.“ It has been rewarding to see our numbers grow and the profession develop through the years. ”

Ellington earned her B.S. in Nursing from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks in 1964. She continued her education through the University of Wisconsin Extension and became a part of the UW/St. Mary’s Family Practice Physician Team. In 1976, Ellington enthusiastically accepted a position as nurse practitioner at Medical Associates of Baraboo. Ellington insists this award truly belongs to the community that encompasses Baraboo, Lake Delton and the surrounding communities. She credits the community’s eagerness to help with her students’ success and notes that the medical community also deserves credit for their support of the expanded role of nursing and subsequent support for the students.

“Without the willingness of the community to accept the presence of students in their care milieu, it would have been impossible for them to experience the hands-on training necessary for their practice.

Ellington will receive the Preceptor of the Year Award on April 12, 2008 in Louisville, Kentucky on behalf of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. Dean/St. Mary’s Regional Clinics would like to congratulate Judith on her many accomplishments throughout the years and thank her for her continued service to the community.

“Working with clients and co-workers to enhance the health of individuals through assessment, diagnosis, education and empowerment is a challenge I love,” says Ellington.

Lake Delton Clinic is one of more than 30 clinics that comprise the Dean/St. Mary’s Regional Clinic network. A joint venture of Dean Health System and St. Mary’s Hospital, both of Madison, it is one of the largest networks of physician practices in the Midwest.
