Dean Allergists Share Expertise with International Colleagues

MADISON, WI – Approximately 20 physicians recently traveled to Madison from Portugal to learn firsthand how Dean Allergists and Immunologists are providing exceptional care to asthma patients. Don Bukstein, MD, and Alan Luskin, MD, Dean Allergy and Immunology specialists, facilitated the two-day program along with Ray Davis, MD, of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

The Portuguese physicians reviewed the new National Institutes of Health guidelines for asthma care and were introduced to the principles of problem-based learning. Problem-based learning is an instructional strategy that challenges people to "learn to learn," working cooperatively in groups to seek solutions to real world problems.

“Rather than using more traditional seminar learning, with an instructor or panel presenting information to attendees, this forum fostered active learning and interaction with asthma patients,” said Dr. Bukstein. “The physicians collaborated on how best to treat individual patients, knowledge that can then be shared with colleagues in Europe.”

Four patients participated in these activities, each sharing a story of how severe asthma impacted on daily activity, work, family and mental health. All had received care from Dr. Bukstein and currently have control over their asthma.
