DR. CRAIG SAMITT NAMED NEW DEAN PRESIDENT AND CEO
MADISON, WI – Craig E. Samitt, MD, MBA, has accepted the position of President and Chief Executive Officer for Dean Health System (DHS), in Madison, Wisconsin. Dr. Samitt is currently Chief Operating Officer at Fallon Clinic in Worcester, Massachusetts. He will assume his new position in September.
Dr. Samitt succeeds Allen D. Kemp, MD, who announced last fall that he would be transitioning from his leadership role after 10 years. Dr. Kemp has assumed the role of CEO Emeritus representing Dean on a national healthcare level.
"I'm honored to be joining such a well-established and well-respected health care system as Dean in this role,” said Dr. Samitt. "At a time when there is much need for reform in the healthcare industry, Dean is perfectly positioned to set an example for other healthcare organizations. The healthcare industry needs standard-setters, and I believe that Dean is a leader in this regard."
“We are very fortunate to have a person with such outstanding experience join us,” said Mark Kaufman, MD, Chairman of the DHS Board of Directors. “His history of leadership in process improvement, outcomes measurement and service excellence will serve us well as we develop a care delivery system that is more effective, efficient and patient-centered,” he added.
Dr. Samitt has 16 years of clinical and healthcare management experience. At Fallon Clinic he has been responsible for all clinical and business operations. Fallon Clinic is a multi-specialty group practice with 250 physicians, 25 locations and 1,700 employees. DHS has almost 500 physicians, 60 locations and over 3,000 employees.
Prior to joining Fallon Clinic in 2002, Dr. Samitt served as Senior Vice President for Marketing, Sales and Customer Service at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, a health insurance company in Wellesley, Massachusetts. In earlier years, while at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Brookline Massachusetts, he served in a number of capacities including Senior Executive of their largest ambulatory care center, Corporate Director of the Internal Medicine Department and Chief of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Samitt earned an undergraduate degree in Biology at Tufts University. He earned his Medical degree from Columbia University and completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Dr. Samitt received his MBA from the Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia.
"I'm delighted to be coming to Madison. The city is vibrant and the people are warm. I very much look forward to making a home in this community,” added Dr. Samitt.
