Madison Area Dermatologists Offer Annual Free Skin Cancer Screening, June 2

MADISON, WI—Visitors to this Saturday’s Farmer’s Market on the Capitol Square will be able to score fresh vegetables, baked bread, and, if they stop by the downtown YWCA, a free skin cancer screening.

Dean Health System and UW Health dermatologists are again teaming up to hold free skin cancer screenings from 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday June 2, at the YWCA building on 101 East Mifflin Street off the Capitol Square. No appointment is necessary. Last year, dermatologists screened nearly 6,000 people in a single day, setting a new Guinness World’s Record.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, and it can be deadly if not diagnosed and treated. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one American dies of melanoma almost every hour (every 65 minutes). In a little more than 20 years, the incidence of melanoma among men more than doubled; among women it increased by 50 percent.

With early detection, skin cancer can be highly curable--the five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads is 99 percent.

In addition to receiving a free skin cancer screening, participants who drop by the YWCA on Saturday morning will be educated about sun protection and self-skin examinations.
