Breastfeeding: Benefits for Baby and Mom

Calling all moms-to-be! August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month, but did you know that Dean provides breastfeeding resources year-round for nursing moms?

Dean/St. Mary's Health Works offers regular breastfeeding classes — from learning the basics, to how to provide breast milk for your baby after you return to work or school. Health Works also sells a range of Medela® breast pumps for breastfeeding mothers.

Why? Because we know that breastfeeding has long-term benefits for both baby and mother.

Breastfeeding infantBreast Milk Benefits for Your Baby
• Breast milk contains the right amount of fat, sugar, water, and protein that is needed for the health and optimal growth and development of your baby, and it is easier to digest.
• Breast milk also contains antibodies that protect your baby from illness and disease.
• Breastfed babies are less likely to develop allergies or get dental cavities.
• Breastfed babies do not gain unnecessary weight and may be less likely to become overweight in later life.

Benefits for You
• Breastfeeding helps your uterus return to its original size more quickly and lessens any bleeding after you give birth.
• Breastfeeding your baby uses up extra calories, making it easier for you to lose the extra pounds gained from pregnancy.
• Breastfeeding may also reduce your risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
• Breastfeeding is convenient and saves you time and money—no formula to purchase or prepare.
• Breastfeeding helps you bond with your new baby.

  HEALTHY RECIPES
Summer Salads for an Outdoor Feast

Summer fruitPlanning a backyard bash, dinner on the deck, or a picnic at the park? Treat your family and friends to these delectable salads, and provide a healthy dose of nutrition at the same time! (And yes, these salads are great for serving indoors too.)

Summer Fruit with Honey-Lemon Dressing
Greek-Style Picnic Salad

The Summer Fruit with Honey-Lemon Dressing combines luscious, in-season summer fruit – cantaloupe, peaches, apricots and sweet cherries – which are excellent sources of vitamins A, C and antioxidants. Did you know that a single serving of cantaloupe provides 100% of the daily value for Vitamin A? Peaches, apricots and cantaloupe are all good sources of Vitamin C, which your body needs a daily supply of for good health. Cherries also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Spinach used in the Greek-Style Picnic Salad is a nutrient powerhouse! Although its iron and calcium are not well absorbed, spinach is a great source of Vitamins, A, C and E. It's also a good source of folate and important antioxidant nutrients. Olives are a good source of monounsaturated fats, and legumes provide soluble fiber. Folate, monounsaturated fats, and soluble fiber all help protect against heart disease.
