Neurology / Memory Assessment Center
What is the Dean Memory Assessment Center?
We help patients and their family members determine if their memory loss needs
further medical attention. Your visit with a multi-disciplinary group of providers
(including a neurologist, neuropsychologist and registered nurse) includes
multiple diagnostic tools to determine whether or not you have a memory problem
that requires further medical treatment or follow-up.
We can help support you with:
• potential lifestyle changes
• practical behavioral strategies
• prescriptions for medications
• referrals to community agencies
What are possible warning signs?
1. Memory loss that affects day-to-day function
2. Difficulty performing familiar tasks
3. Problems with language
4. Disorientation of time and place
5. Poor or decreased judgment
6. Problems with abstract thinking
7. Misplacing things
8. Changes in mood and behavior
9. Changes in personality
10. Loss of initiative
What can I expect at the
appointment?
Each appointment will last approximately two hours. The first
part of the visit includes a meeting between the patient and
a neuropsychologist, while at the same time the
patient’s
family members or caretakers take part in a separate meeting
with a specially-trained nurse. These meetings
include a series of questions and various assessment
tools to learn more from you and your
family about the memory loss you’ve
been experiencing. This information will then be passed on to
the neurologist who
will conduct the second part
of the appointment.
The neurologist will start by discussing your history with you and conducting a physical exam. He will then have a family conference to collect more details and determine whether or not you need medication or follow up care. The doctor can also help counsel you on potential lifestyle changes, practical behavioral strategies, prescriptions for medications, and/or referrals to community agencies
