Living Well With Diabetes - The First Steps
The Living Well with Diabetes - First Steps class offers basic instruction for individuals with Type 2 diabetes, and a member of their family. Participants attend three 2.5-hour sessions. The class covers the following topics:
- What is diabetes and why it is important to manage the disease
- Nutrition in diabetes, presented by a Dean registered dietitian*
- The role of exercise in controlling diabetes
- How to monitor blood glucose levels (includes meter and instructions)
- Discussion of treatment options, including diabetes medications
- How to deal with hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia and "sick days"
- Ways to prevent diabetes complications
- Living with diabetes, presented by a Dean psychologist
- Lifestyle changes and resources to help you live well with diabetes
* Participants are requested to meet with a Dean registered dietitian for an individualized assessment and meal plan.

There is a fee for the class, which is typically covered by insurance. Contact your health insurance company to verify coverage. Ten hours of initial diabetes education is a one time benefit of Medicare Part B, but two hours of follow-up training is available in subsequent years. You must be referred by a physician or advanced practitioner and meet specific Medicare diagnostic criteria for diabetes.

Dean's Diabetes Education Program in Madison holds monthly information and support group meetings for all people with diabetes. Find the support and information you need about diabetes here!
Meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 7:00 - 8:30 pm at Dean Clinic, 1313 Fish Hatchery Road, in the lower level deli area.
