Type of medicine: antifungal

Generic and brand names: butenafine hydrochloride, topical; Lotrimin Ultra; Mentax; Mentax TC

This medicine is a cream applied to the skin to treat:

• athlete's foot
• jock itch
• ringworm or other fungal infections on the skin of the chest, back and shoulders.

Tell your healthcare provider if have had an allergic reaction to any medicine.

Females of childbearing age: Tell your health care provider if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Use this medicine exactly as your health care provider prescribes. Take it as long as prescribed, even if your symptoms improve. If you stop using this medicine too soon, your infection may return.

Wash your hands before and after you apply this medicine.

Before you use this medicine, wash your skin with mild soap and warm water. Rinse and pat dry with a soft towel.

Put a thin layer of medicine on the area where you need it. Using too much medicine or using it too often can increase the risk of side effects from absorption into your body. Do not put a tight bandage on the area unless your health care provider approves.

Do not get any medicine in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you accidentally get medicine in your eyes, nose, or mouth, rinse the area well with cool water.

This medicine is for external (on the skin) use only.

Do not use this medicine for any condition other than the condition for which it was prescribed. Do not give this medicine to other persons.

Along with its needed effects, your medicine may cause some unwanted side effects. Some side effects may be very serious. Some side effects may go away as your body adjusts to the medicine. Tell your health care provider if you have any side effects that continue or get worse.

Serious (report these to your health care provider): If the condition gets worse, severe irritation, rash, blisters, swelling.

Other: Burning, stinging, itching.

No significant interactions have been reported. However, tell your health care provider about any other medicines you may be applying to your skin, including nonprescription products.

Keep a list of all your medicines (prescription, nonprescription, supplements, natural remedies, and vitamins) with you. Be sure that you tell all health care providers who treat you about all the products you are taking.

Store this medicine at room temperature. Keep the container tightly closed. Protect it from heat, high humidity, and bright light.
