Dean Health Plan earns Five-Star Rating for 2018 Medicare Advantage

MADISON, Wis. (October 13, 2017) – Dean Health Plan is proud to announce that we have earned 5 stars out of a possible 5 for all Medicare Advantage coverage options from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as part of its annual Star Ratings for 2018.

This is the first year it was possible for Dean Advantage plans to receive a Star Rating.

This distinction is the best rating possible and reflects a high quality of care and service. CMS rated 384 Medicare Advantage contracts this year. Dean Health Plan’s contract is one of only 15 nationally to have earned the overall 5-star rating for Medicare Advantage with prescription drug plans.

CMS calculates and shares Star Ratings for Medicare health and drug plans to help beneficiaries and their families compare plans based on quality and performance. Ratings are given for quality measures across several categories including managing chronic conditions, helping members stay healthy, member satisfaction, and pharmacy services.

“We were pleased to earn the top rating in our first year of eligibility,” said Stephen Arnhold, Chief Actuary & Government Programs Segment Leader for Dean Health Plan.

“It’s absolutely a reflection of our spirit of service brought by Dean Health Plan employees, the engagement with our amazing members and the collaboration with the providers in our network. They do an outstanding job providing high quality care and service to these community members.”

Medicare beneficiaries are limited in the times they can enroll and change Medicare Advantage and Part D plans. This is referred to as the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). However, prospective members are allowed to enroll year-round in five-star plans.

This overall plan rating gives a single score, so consumers can easily compare plans based on their quality and performance. Regarding quality and performance ratings, Medicare.gov states that “giving good quality care means doing the right thing, at the right time and in the right way to get the best results possible.” The web site describes the 5-Star rating as “Excellent” and the 3-Star rating as “Average.”

Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5-star rating system. Star Ratings are calculated each year and may change from one year to the next. See Medicare.gov for more information.
