Dean Health Plan Earns High Ratings for Quality

Dean Health Plan, a member of SSM Health, received high quality ratings from NCQA and CMS, both independent, industry-recognized organizations that monitor and report on the quality efforts of health plans throughout the nation. Dean Health Plan received these ratings on a wide-range of its health insurance products, representing the strength of quality standards and practices throughout its plan offerings.

Organizations that released new ratings this fall included the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), which awarded Dean Health Plan an “Excellent Accreditation” status for its Commercial HMO plans. NCQA also provided an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 for Dean Health Plan’s Commercial HMO plans. Only seven other Wisconsin health plans received the same rating and no other Wisconsin health plan scored higher. Status and ratings are part of NCQA’s Private Health Insurance Plan Ratings for 2016-2017.

Another organization that released new ratings included the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS rated Dean Health Plan 4 out of 5 stars for its individual marketplace HMO plan. Dean Health Plan also received a 4-star rating for its individual marketplace Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) plan, which is a similar product offering with a more limited network of hospitals and providers.

“In an increasingly competitive marketplace, we believe it’s our responsibility to remain effective at meeting customer expectations,” says Frank Lucia, President and Chief Executive Officer of Dean Health Plan. “Ratings by NCQA and CMS provide actionable market intelligence and competitive benchmarking data to help us make sure we are effectively meeting the needs of today’s marketplace. Earning these ratings helps validate our never-ending focus on high-quality coverage and commitment to the health of the members we serve every day.”

DeanCare Gold* (Cost), another Dean Health Plan Medicare plan, was also recognized by CMS with 5 out of 5 stars, making it one of the highest-rated Medicare plans in Wisconsin. This marks the sixth year in a row that Dean Health Plan’s DeanCare Gold (Cost) plan has achieved the highest rating possible from CMS.

NCQA and CMS star ratings intend to help consumers easily compare plans based on quality of care and service delivery when selecting a plan. NCQA and CMS use their own methodology and performance measures to determine ratings. NCQA star ratings can be viewed on ncqa.org and CMS star ratings can be viewed on medicare.gov.

* DeanCare Gold (Cost) is a Medicare-approved Cost plan available to Medicare-eligible residents in Dane, Columbia, Dodge, Grant, Iowa, Jefferson, Rock and Sauk counties. DeanCare Gold (Cost) is an HMO plan with a Medicare contract. Enrollment in DeanCare Gold (Cost) depends on contract renewal.

Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5-star rating system. Star Ratings are calculated each year and may change from one year to the next.
