Culture of Caring: SSM Health employees give back

At SSM Health we find immense pride in our culture of caring and compassion. This is evident in our day-to-day interactions with patients, but also in the giving spirit of our employees. Check out some of the ways our staff is giving back to the communities we serve, during the holidays and beyond.

Dean Health Plan

Employees at Dean Health Plan look for meaningful ways to give back year round. Every year employees participate in the Second Harvest Share Your Holiday campaign. This year Dean Health Plan employees exceeded their goal by donating 88,223 meals to families in need. An impressive way to share good tidings with communities across southern Wisconsin!

Staff also participated in a holiday clothing drive that provided professional clothing for donation to Porchlight and Domestic Abuse Intervention Services. Children’s winter accessories were also collected and delivered to Olson Elementary School for students in need.

The giving spirit of Dean Health Plan employees does not end with the holidays. Members of the Sales and Client Services Department volunteer with St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Madison by helping to prepare and serve meals at the church’s weekly “Meals for Madison” events on Fridays. This special weekly gathering offers a free meal to anyone needing a warm meal and friendly face.

Stay tuned to the new Dean Health Plan Facebook page for updates on other ways employees are giving back to our communities throughout 2017.

SSM Health Janesville Campus

Employees on our Janesville medical campus participate in community events throughout the year. Over the holidays, they were involved in a number of charitable campaigns, including: a Giving Tuesday fundraising drive for HealthNet’s free dental services, an annual Christmas toy drive for ECHO and the “adoption” of students and families at both public high schools. The campus team ensured that 39 students from Parker High School and their siblings enjoyed happier holidays by donating money and gift items for the Parker Closet. This program provides toiletries, school supplies, clothing, food and other needs to students and their families through challenging economic times. Staff purchased toiletries and gift cards for a similar assistance program at Craig High School in Janesville.

SSM Health Baraboo

Staff and providers in Baraboo are always busy giving back. The holidays are no exception. Among many activities that include participating in local giving tree campaigns, donations collected through holiday gift basket raffles and much more, St. Clare Hospital holds an annual holiday meal for staff, families and community members. In December, hospital leadership served more than 1,060 meals for the 2016 Holiday Meal.

Staff at the Dean Medical Group and Davis Duehr Dean Eye Care locations in Baraboo held a “donation competition” to see which group of employees could collect the most items for the local warming shelter that serves Baraboo area homeless people. More than 300 pounds of personal items, cleaning products, children’s art supplies and blankets were delivered to the shelter!

SSM Health Madison

Because we know that hardships happen to anyone – including those we consider family – staff at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison participated in the Care and Share Holiday Gift Program. Through the generosity of their co-workers, 38 employees of St. Mary’s Hospital and St. Mary’s Care Center and their families had a brighter Christmas while going through their own time of need.

Dean Medical Group’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine department gave back to a local group of parents who have lost a child or children through miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death. Donations went to support the Bereaved Parents of Madison, a support group that meets at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Madison on the third Thursday of each month at 7:30 pm. You can find more about the group here.

Additional efforts planned

Of course, this is just a small sampling of the incredible generosity employees share with our patients, colleagues and communities each and every day. Stay tuned to our Facebook pages and The Pulse for more on the ways we’re giving back.
