NBA All-Star Dominique Wilkins to Celebrate Healthy Living & Celebrate Opening of the Boys & Girls Club Fitness Center

Wilkins will share how he maintains a healthy lifestyle while living with Type 2 Diabetes

Madison, WI (July 29, 2015) – Dean & St. Mary’s are proud to join Novo Nordisk in bringing NBA All-Star Dominique Wilkins to share his story of managing Type 2 Diabetes with area families at the Taft Street Boys and Girls Club.

Just a year after retiring from professional basketball, the legendary former Atlanta Hawks guard was diagnosed with the disease that took his father’s and grandfather’s lives – Type 2 Diabetes. Now, Wilkins is managing his disease with a healthy lifestyle, providing inspiration and advice for others living with Diabetes.

“We are excited and honored to join Novo Nordisk in bringing Dominique Wilkins to Madison,” says Damond Boatwright, Wisconsin Regional President of Hospital Operations for SSM Health. “By bringing his story to our community we hope to show families the power a healthy lifestyle can have on preventing and managing Diabetes.”

Now, 15 years after his diagnosis, Wilkins is still active in the Atlanta Hawks organization where he serves as the Vice President of Basketball Operations. He is passionate about sharing how making healthy lifestyle choices is helping him manage his Diabetes.

“We are so grateful to Dominique Wilkins for coming to speak with our young people about how the decisions they make every day can seriously impact their health today,” says Michael Johnson, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County. “When a person like Dominique comes to the community to meet directly with young people it could inspire them to work hard and live healthier so they can achieve their dreams.”

Wilkins will also help celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Taft Street Boys and Girls Club Fitness Center. This new center will give Boys and Girls Club members increased access to fitness equipment.

In addition to meeting Wilkins and hearing him speak, event attendees will be invited to:

  • Tour the newly renovated fitness center
  • Enjoy healthy snacks
  • Gather healthy diet ideas
  • Visit the community health fair
  • Learn about programs in our community for those living with Diabetes

Community members, families and those living with Diabetes are invited to attend this special evening with Wilkins starting at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4 at the Boys and Girls Club Taft Street location (2001 Taft Street, Madison).
