Special Enrollment Period Announced for March 15-April 30

The Federal Government is giving certain individuals and families another chance to buy health insurance for 2015. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced February 20 that those who did not have health insurance in 2014 and are subject to the fee for not having secured it, may be eligible to participate in a new Special Enrollment Period March 15- April 30.

Those eligible:

  • Currently are not enrolled in coverage through the Marketplace for 2015
  • Attest that when they filed their 2014 taxes, they paid the fee for not having had coverage
  • Attest that they first became aware of the fee after preparing their taxes.

“We recognize that this is the first tax filing season where consumers may have to pay a fee or claim an exemption for having health insurance coverage, “ said SCMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner. “Our priority is to make sure consumers understand the new requirement to enroll in health coverage and to provide those who were not aware or did not understand the new requirement with an opportunity to enroll in affordable coverage this year.”

For more information, see the CMS website.
