Parent University Offers Wealth of Parenting Support

Workshops with advice on topics from puberty to online safety and more will include helpful insight from Dean Family Medicine providers, local educators and community leaders

Raising healthy, happy kids is no easy task, which is why Dean Clinic is again joining forces with area educators and community leaders for Parent University.

The 2014 Parent University will take place Wednesday, October 1 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Rome Corners Intermediate School, 1111 S. Perry Parkway in Oregon.

Parent University is free for families with kids of all ages. This year’s event will begin with a light supper and will include workshops and lectures on:

  • Parenting the Love and Logic Way  for All Ages
  • Positive Peer Relationships
  • Mindful Parent, Mindful Child
  • Puberty – You survived it once, you can do it again!
  • Safe at home – What parents and kids need to know
  • Kids, the internet and social media: Keeping kids safe and healthy
  • What young athletes need from parents

Dean Clinic – Oregon Family Medicine providers Dr. Joanne Bisgrove and Dr. Laura Mendyk will be presenting at the event. Both providers believe workshops and open dialog between parents and presenters helps shine a light on the important role educators, primary care providers and other community leaders have in raising healthy, happy kids

“Raising healthy, intelligent and well-rounded children is a team effort between primary care providers, parents, school educators and community leaders,” says Dr. Bisgrove. “It’s that ‘it takes a village to raise a family’ philosophy.”

“I often feel that I don’t have time to discuss all of the issues involved with normal development during an office visit,” adds Dr. Mendyk. “This is a chance to get out into the community and connect with parents who live in Oregon and the surrounding areas.”

Parent University is a free event focused on school aged families, but families of any age are welcome to attend.

To register for this event and to help provide an accurate count for dinner, email organizer Cynthia at cad@oregonsd.net. Remember to include your name, the number of adults and children attending, as well as your children’s ages.

This year’s event is sponsored by Dean Clinic – Oregon, the Oregon School District, Oregon Public Library and Stoughton Hospital.
