Taking Patient-Centered Care Beyond Our Borders

A Dean Doctor Uses His Summer Vacation to Teach Students in Ghana

Dr. Philip Bain, an Internal Medicine doctor at Dean Clinic - East, recently returned to Madison after teaching a summer internship program in Ghana, West Africa. The program, sponsored by Global Brigades, gave students an in depth analysis of the healthcare system in Ghana and included lectures on specific diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and diarrheal diseases. Students also learned about governmental programs focused on malnutrition, mental health and family planning.

"The students really got an in depth look at the problems faced every day by Ghanaians," said Dr. Bain.

In addition to the formal lectures, students went directly in to the remote farming and fishing villages in the central region of Ghana, one of the country's poorest areas. During their time there, students were able to talk with and interview families through interpreters about the various challenges Ghanaians face in day to day living.

"The highlight of the trip for me was a visit to one of the local health centers," said Dr. Bain. "I was amazed to see that many of the very things that we focus on at Dean - patient satisfaction, population management and transparent posting of progress in disease management are also focused on in rural Ghana. It was truly an unforgettable experience."

Students participating in the summer internship come from all over the world. Dr. Bain taught students from the USA, Scotland, Korea, Japan, Tibet, China and Germany.
