SSM Health Care and Dean Finalize Merger

September 3, 2013

Dear Patients & Members,

Today we are pleased to announce that Dean Health Systems, including Dean Health Plan have finalized a deal to merge with SSM Health Care.  SSM has been present in Wisconsin since 1912 when it opened St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.  The merger became effective on September 1 after all necessary regulatory approvals were received.

Both Dean and SSM Health Care have a national reputation for quality, and the merger creates one of the largest integrated health delivery networks in the country. Dean has expertise in managing physician practices, while SSM has geographic breadth and expertise in acute care.

By bringing together hospitals, clinics and the health plan, Dean and SSM are uniquely positioned to better coordinate care to keep people healthier and improve the patient experience. Over time, this integrated approach will contribute not only to better outcomes for people, but will lower the overall cost of care.

We have a long tradition of caring for people, and together we will create a new model of care and caring that will lead to healthier people in Wisconsin and beyond.  We remain absolutely committed to what has made both Dean and SSM successful in the past: doing what is best for the people we serve.

As patients and members, we value you, and want you to know that you will continue to experience the same exceptional care you have always had and will not see any disruption in the care or service you receive.
This merger cements the 100-year relationship between Dean and SSM Health Care. In Wisconsin, SSM also owns St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo, St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital in Janesville, St. Mary’s Care Center in Madison, and St. Clare Meadows Care Center in Baraboo.

Dean Health Systems, Inc. is an organization comprised of a network of 60+ clinics, Dean Health Plan, Davis Duehr Dean eye care, Dean Pharmacy and Navitus Health Solutions.

We look forward to serving you well into the future.

Sincerely,
Allison Mooney                           Lon Sprecher
Interim President, Dean Clinic        President/CEO, Dean Health Plan

About SSM Health Care

SSM Health Care is a Catholic, not-for-profit health system located in four Midwest states. Its merger with the Wisconsin-based Dean Health Systems transforms SSM from a hospital-based system to a large integrated delivery system with networks in each of its regions.

In Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Illinois and Missouri, SSM includes more than 150 outpatient sites, a pharmacy benefit company, an insurance plan, 18 hospitals, two nursing homes, home care, hospice, a technology company, and an Accountable Care Organization. With more than 1,300 employed physicians and 30,000 employees in four states, SSM is one of the largest employers in every community it serves. An early adopter of the electronic health record, SSM is now a national leader for the depth of its EHR integration. The addition of Dean brings the number of clinic/outpatient visits to 4 million annually.

Begun in 1872 by five Catholic sisters, SSM Health Care looks for ways to promote good health among people in the communities it serves. It was the first health care organization to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest award for quality.
