Dean Clinic, St. Mary’s and Stoughton Hospitals Achieve Highest Level of Electronic Health Record Adoption

Stage 7 reached by just .9% of all ambulatory facilities and 1.9% of hospitals nationwide

Madison, WI -- HIMSS Analytics, the research division of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), has recognized Dean Clinic, St. Mary’s and Stoughton Hospitals with its Stage 7 Award. Stage 7 represents attainment of the highest level on the HIMSS Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model, which is used to track electronic medical record progress at hospitals and health systems around the nation and world.

In addition, Dean Clinic and St. Mary’s Hospital are the first partnering ambulatory and hospital organizations in the country that have both been recognized with Stage 7 electronic health record adoption at the same time.

Stage 7 places Dean Clinic, one of only three in the country, in the top .9 percent of all ambulatory facilities nationwide in terms of electronic medical record use. Stage 7 puts St. Mary’s and Stoughton in the top 1.9 percent of hospitals nationwide.

Reaching Stage 7 means that all records at a hospital or clinic are electronic. This gives caregivers instant computer access to patient information no matter their location, eliminating reliance on paper records, and reducing the number of preventable errors that can be made using traditional manual systems.

In addition, hospitals and health systems that have attained Stage 7 are able to share patient information with other health care providers, which can ultimately improve patient care and safety. Hospitals and health systems with a comprehensive electronic health record system in place also allows caregivers to automatically cross-check medications against other prescribed drugs, diagnoses and lab results, and suggest possible changes in treatment.

“Achieving Stage 7 is a validation of Dean & SSM Health Care’s longstanding intent to assure our patients and health care providers that they will have all the information they need to make critical decisions whenever and wherever the patient is seen,” says Dave Lundal VP and Regional CIO for SSM Health Care of Wisconsin and Dean Clinic.  “Our belief is that all of our efforts to create a connected health enterprise, to making sure the right information is available at the right time to the right caregiver, is one of the best things we can do to improve care.”

HIMSS Analytics developed the electronic medical record Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Database. There are eight stages (0-7) that measure a hospital’s implementation and utilization of information technology applications. The final stage, Stage 7, represents an advanced patient record environment. The validation process to confirm a hospital has reached Stage 7 includes a site visit by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current chief information officers to ensure an unbiased evaluation of the Stage 7 environments.

SSM Health Care of Wisconsin hospitals, including St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo and St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital along with affiliates Columbus Community Hospital, Edgerton Hospital, and Upland Hills Health Hospital in Dodgeville attained Stage 6 recognition, a recognition just 9.1 percent of hospitals in the nation have achieved.

All of these hospitals along with Dean Clinic will be recognized at the 2014 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition on Feb. 24-26, 2014, in Orlando, Fla.
