Thomas Jackson Dean: Carpenter and Alderman
Thomas Jackson Dean, the grandfather of Dr. Joseph Dean, was the first member of the Dean family to immigrate to the United States. He was born in Birmingham, England, in 1826 and married Elizabeth Brocklehurst in 1846. Joseph, Dr. Joe’s father, was born in Manchester, England, in 1849. A year later, his family left England and settled in Milwaukee. On January 1, 1851, they moved to Madison, which became their permanent home.
Thomas was a carpenter, contractor and manufacturer of sashes, doors and blinds. His company and planing mill were located in the 400 block of West Main Street. He also served as an alderman for several terms in Madison’s fourth ward beginning in 1871.
