Dean is one of the largest integrated health-care delivery systems in the country. Established in 1904 and headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, Dean provides:

  • Medical and health services through a network of Dean or St. Mary's/Dean-owned clinics throughout southern Wisconsin.
  • Health insurance services through Dean Health Plan.
  • Ancillary health services within Dean Clinic locations.
  • Clinical research and education, through Dean Foundation.

Dean is a for-profit, integrated healthcare organization based in Madison, Wisconsin. Dean consists of a network of more than 60 clinics in south-central Wisconsin, Davis Duehr Dean eye care, insurance provider Dean Health Plan, and pharmacy benefits company Navitus Health Solutions. Approximately 500 physicians provide primary, specialty and tertiary care in the clinics. The system serves more than 300,000 health plan members.

Dean joined the SSM Health system in September 2013. SSM Health is a St. Louis-based order which also owns several hospitals nationwide, including St. Mary's Hospital in Madison and Janesville, Wisconsin and St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo, Wisconsin.

Dean Clinic Locations

The original "Dean Clinic" began in 1904 in Madison, when Dr. Joseph Dean opened a small downtown practice. Today, Dean Clinic comprises a multi-specialty network of clinics that provide exceptional primary and specialized medical care in central locations throughout Dane, Rock and Walworth Counties, including more than 30 regional and eye network clinics providing convenient care to outlying communities in southern Wisconsin, and three Day Surgery Centers in Madison and Janesville providing outpatient surgery and care.

Dean/St. Mary's Regional Clinics

St. Mary's/Dean Ventures, Inc. (SMDV) was formed in 1989 as a joint venture between St. Mary's Hospital and Dean Clinic to create a network of local community clinics linked to advanced specialty care in Madison.

Today, there are more than 30 Dean/St Mary's regional and eye network clinics providing convenient care to outlying communities in southern Wisconsin, and three St. Mary's/Dean Day Surgery Centers in Madison and Janesville providing outpatient surgery and care.

Davis Duehr Dean

Davis Duehr Dean ophthalmologists and optometrists are part of the Dean network, providing specialty eye care throughout southern Wisconsin. They make up the ophthalmology and optometry departments and full-service optical stores of Dean.

Established in 1983, Dean Health Plan is the insurance services subsidiary of Dean Health System and SSM Health. It maintains a position of leadership in insurance services through a physician-led integrated health system that improves the health status of its members and delivers a superior level of service and care. 

Dean Health Plan earned the "Highest Member Satisfaction among Commercial Health Plans in the Minnesota/Wisconsin Region, three years in a row," from the prestigious J.D. Power and Associates 2011 U.S. Member Health Insurance Plan StudySM. Dean Health Plan also holds an Excellent Accreditation - the highest accreditation available - from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its commercial HMO product and has received the Best of Business Award in the state from Corporate Report Wisconsin for the past four years. And, Dean Health Plan has been recognized as the nation’s top 12 Federal employee plans based on user satisfaction during the 2011 open choice season.*    

Dean Health Plan received the highest numerical score among commercial health plans in the Minnesota-Wisconsin region in the proprietary J.D. Power and Associates 2009-2011 U.S. Member Health Insurance Plan StudiesSM. 2011 study based on 33,039 total member responses, measuring 9 plans in the Minnesota-Wisconsin Region (excludes Medicare and Medicaid). The Dean Foundation for Health, Research and Education, Inc. is the non-profit research and education entity of Dean. Dean Foundation conducts clinical studies and clinical drug trials, health services research, outcome management studies, and population based research within the Foundation's Psychiatric Department and in partnership with Dean Clinic physicians.

The Foundation manages and administers the Dean Institutional Review Board which ensures that human subjects who participate in clinical studies are provided complete information about the purposes of each study, the design and procedures, potential benefits, risks, and alternative treatments, while ensuring participant confidentiality.

Dean Foundation also coordinates Dean's Passenger Safety Program within the community, and helps provide access to health care through neighborhood based clinics serving medically under-served families and their children.
