Rock County’s First Childhood Obesity Intervention Program Ready for Launch

Focus is on weight loss and wellness for the entire family

Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children in the past thirty years and now nearly one in five is considered obese. That’s why a group of area health and education organizations, led by St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital, have created a unique program designed to help families with an obese child gain the skills they need to lose weight, get fit and change behaviors. It is the first program of its kind in Rock County.

Fit Families Rock is an 11-week program based on the latest weight loss research that features experts on behavioral change, stress management, nutrition and exercise from St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital, Dean Clinic-Janesville East, Janesville Family YMCA, UW Extension-Family Living and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The program will meet on Monday and Wednesday, 4-5:30 p.m. at the Downtown Janesville Family YMCA from September 23 to December 4. To be eligible, families must have at least one child between the ages of 8 to 12 who is in the 85th percentile of their age-appropriate body mass index (BMI). In addition, the family must commit to having at least one parent attend all sessions although the entire family is welcome to participate.

The cost to families is $25, which includes individualized follow-up and a three-month family membership to the Janesville Family YMCA.
Class size is limited to allow individual attention for each family. To be considered for the program, families must complete a 10-15 minute phone interview. To set up an interview, call the UW-Extension Office at 608-757-5689.

The first group of families enrolled in Fit Families Rock will be part of a research study conducted by the UW - Extension. The goal of the study is to identify the most effective interventions, improve the program for future offerings, and provide information to other organizations across the country that are looking to create similar programs. All of the individual information about participating families will be kept confidential.

Fit Families Rock is a component of St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital’s focus on promoting healthy lifestyles in the communities we serve. Our community health priorities were identified through a Community Health Needs

Assessment conducted in 2012 with the Rock County Health Department and other Rock County health care providers. Additional components include St. Mary’s Janesville’s annual Produce Power and Janesville in Motion events as well as its sponsorship of the Janesville Farmer’s Market
