Dean & St. Mary’s Neighborhood Asthma Clinic Helps Patients Breathe Easy

Volunteer Clinic Offers Free Medication and Treatments for Asthma Patients

Madison – Last year 845 patients turned to the Dean & St. Mary’s Neighborhood Asthma Clinic for help. These men, women and children need help controlling their asthma despite tough economic circumstances including job loss, fixed incomes and lack of health insurance. During 2012, 87 percent of clinic patients had no health insurance.

Despite these struggles, these patients still need medical attention. One such patient is Mary. At age 70, she has suffered from severe asthma for much of her life. Her fixed income made it more difficult to manage her asthma symptoms and after 50 years of symptoms she felt breathing would always be a struggle.

A few years ago, a severe asthma attack landed her in St. Mary’s Hospital when she was in Madison visiting family. During her three day hospitalization a staff member suggested Mary visit the clinic.

Mary visited the clinic and providers gave her free medication and education that help keep her asthma under control – so much that she calls it “magic.” She also credits the clinic with saving her life.

Mary is now a regular patient at the clinic when she travels from Neillsville to visit her family in Madison.

“I never used to be so healthy,” she explains, adding that she feels better now than she did 20 years ago. “My friends ask me all the time what I’ve done, and I tell them I go to the Magic Clinic in Madison.”

The clinic is located on Madison’s southwest side at 4633 D Verona Road. First come, first served walk-in appointments are available on Tuesday nights from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
