Produce Power Connects Janesville Community to Fresh, Local Nutrition

Free family activities from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 18

St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic-Janesville East want to help the public turn a new leaf in their eating habits. The two healthcare organizations, along with Dean Health Plan, are presenting Produce Power, a winter garden party and health fair featuring free activities for the whole family.

Produce Power will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 18, in Town Square of St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic-Janesville East, located at 3400 E. Racine St., Janesville.

Three Rock County farms—Amazing Grace Family Farm, Tipi Produce and Scotch Hill Farm — will be selling product and shares in their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs. CSAs are basically a subscription program for fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the growing season. Typically, a subscriber pays an upfront fee and receives a weekly box of in-season produce. Dean Health Plan members are eligible to get up to $200 of the CSA cost back through the WIN program. Health Plan staff will be at the event to answer questions.

There will be free cooking demonstrations by executive chefs from Blackhawk Technical College and Best Events. Angie Flickinger of UW-Rock County Extension will show how to prepare the more unusual vegetables that may show up in your CSA box and Amy Stepp of Dean Clinic Comprehensive Weight Management will help you fill your plate and lose weight. Karen Cain of the Rock County Health Department will provide an overview of the Color Me Healthy program for kids.

St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital’s Cardiac Rehab will also be on hand with information about cholesterol management and reducing sodium. They will also offer blood pressure screenings.

In addition, Rotary Botanical Gardens will offer seed planting activities for the kids and Basics Cooperative will host a sampling table. For more information about exhibitors and a presentation schedule, visit stmarysjanesville.com or deancare.com.
